Familiarity with the Lord

Feast of St. Alphonsus Liguori

Readings: Jer. 26:11-16, 24 | Ps. 69:15-16, 30-31 | Mt. 14:1-12

The readings once again speak about the prophets and the prophets’ work. Both Jeremiah and John the Baptist are rejected by those to whom they are sent to save. Jeremiah escapes death, but John is beheaded by Herod because he is afraid to go back on his word. We may never by asked to be prophetic in the same manner of Jeremiah and John; but, all of us are asked to preach the Word of God by the way we live each day. We are asked to live the life of a lover of God. We are asked to be kind, gentle, loving compassionate, etc. We are asked to live in such a way that those who see us will know that we are Christians. Sometimes, that may bring us ridicule and perhaps rejection. How well do you live the life of Christ? Do you remain faithful even when you are rejected?

Take time today to consider how you live. What areas need attention? Are you willing to change? Ask God for the courage you need to do so.
