Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jos. 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b | Ps. 34:2-3, 16-21 | Eph. 5:21-32 | Jn. 6:60-69

The scripture readings today are about following the direction of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Jesus tells us that it is the Spirit who gives life to us. Jesus also tells us that what He has spoken are words of spirit and life. Many of the followers of Jesus are unable to accept Jesus’ words concerning His body and blood being the life of the world. The apostles are asked if they will also leave. Peter responds: “To whom shall we go, you have the words of everlasting life.” We are called to serve the Lord each day of our lives. We cannot serve God if we do not follow the Holy Spirit who leads and directs us. The Holy Spirit is the One who opens our eyes to see in a new manner, opens our ears to hear in a new way, opens our hearts to receive all of God’s words in a new spirit.

Today, spend time with God and be open to hear the words of Christ with new eyes, ears and heart. Be open and pliable so that Christ can touch the depth of your being. Resolve to go out to others with that new vision and new heart.
