1Thes. 3:7-13 | Ps. 90:3-4, 12-14, 17 | Mt. 24:42-51
Both readings teach about faithfulness to the Word of God. Paul is commending the Thessalonians for their steadfastness in keeping all that he has taught them about God and the service of God. Jesus is telling us to stay awake and to be faithful to all His teachings. Jesus compares the faithful carrying out of the Word to trustworthy servants and the lack of so doing to being like a Pharisee who says one thing and does another. Jesus tells us that God will hold us accountable for our commitments and will exact an accounting of what we have done. At the bottom of all this is the virtue of love. If we love God and people, then we will do our best to be faithful and act out of love for others. Love is what enables people to respond positively to all that is asked of us.
Take time to reflect on how faithful you are to doing God’s Word. Where do you slack off? Why? What is the quality of your life for God? How will you improve?
