2 Sam. 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16 | Ps. 89:2-5, 27-29 | Rom. 16:25-27 | Lk 1:26-38 As we draw closer to Christmas, the Church brings us deeper into the mystery of the Incarnation through the readings of today. The Gospel tells the story of the angel appearing to Mary to announce the news that she is to be the mother of God. Mary is visited by God’s angel, and her response is “yes.” She is surprised and terrified as well. God comes to us each day through prayer, other people, events. Are we listening to God’s voice each day? Do we fill our day with all kinds of activities so that we can’t see the numerous ways in which God reveals Himself to us? Silence has a way of preparing our souls to set aside the mundane and non-essentials. It helps us strip away the walls and barriers we have placed between ourselves and God. Silence enables us to see the greatness of God and to know our own dependence on God. Take time to be with God today to prepare for the great feast of Christmas. Allow yourself some space to come to know and experience God’s deep love for you. Then pray Zachary’s canticle of praise.
