Gn. 23:1-4, 19, 24:1-8, 62-67 | Ps. 106:1-5 | Mt. 9:9-13

Genesis relates the death of Sarah, Abraham’s desire for his servant to get a wife for 

Isaac, and Isaac’s acceptance and love of Rebecca, his wife.  We can see that God did indeed bless Abraham with a long life, a life filled with good things and particularly with a Son, Isaac.  The Gospel tells us of the call of Matthew to be a follower of Christ.  Jesus goes to eat with Matthew at his home.  He is criticized by the Pharisees for eating with sinners.  Jesus’ response is that He has come to save sinners, not the righteous.  We are the ones Jesus has come to heal, to save, to bring to new life.  We are called and gifted by God with God’s overwhelming joy and desire to be with us.  We are the ones who need to respond with our “yes” to the call just as Matthew did.  In following Jesus, each day, we will come to new life and to new joy.  Our conversion will continue as we continue to walk with Christ.

Take time to hear God’s call.  Reflect on Abraham’s and Matthew’s response.  Ask God to give you the grace to persevere in following Him each day of your life.
