Thursday of the Fourth Week of Advent
Readings: 2 Sam. 7: 1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16 | Ps. 89:2-5, 27-29 | Lk 1:67-79
The first two readings were used on Sunday. The Gospel is Zachary’s song of praise when he is given back the gift of speech at John’s circumcision. When Zachary writes John’s name on the slate, God loosens his tongue. During these past months Zachary has had time to reflect on God’s action in his life. I would think that he has been able to recall the times God has touched his life, how he has been faithful, where he could have been more attentive, and what it meant to be a priest and a servant of God.
Silence has a way of preparing our souls to set aside the mundane and non-essentials. It helps us strip away the walls and barriers we have placed between ourselves and God. Silence enables us to see the greatness of God and to know our own dependence on God.
Take time to be with God today to prepare for the great feast of Christmas. Allow yourself some space to come to know and experience God’s deep love for you. Then, pray Zachary’s canticle of praise.
