Feast of St. Thomas Becket

 1 Jn 2:3-11 | Ps. 96:1-6 | Lk. 2:22-35

John tells us that those who keep the commandments know God.  To know God is to love God and neighbor.  John wastes no words in telling us that if we hate our neighbor then we walk in darkness, do not walk in God’s light, and do not really love God.

The Gospel tells us about one person who truly knew God and always walked in the light.  Simeon listened to God in prayer.  He was waiting to see the Messiah.  God promised that he would see the Messiah before he died.  Because he listened he was able to hear God’s inspiration to go in the Temple the very day that Mary and Joseph presented Jesus in the Temple.  Simeon recognized Jesus as the Messiah and gave praise and thanks to God for this great gift.

As you celebrate this wonderful Christmas time, spend some time (10-15min.) in prayer.  Pray with this passage from Luke and ask God to help you to become a good listener to the Word and to have the strength to live it in your daily life.
