Readings: 1Jn. 2:12-17 | Ps. 96:7-10 | Lk. 2:36-40
John continues to encourage the people to listen to the Word of God and rejoice in the Lord’s saving power. He tells them not to love the world and the things of the world because it is passing away. Those who do the will of God will live forever. The Gospel is Part II of yesterday’s Gospel. Today, Anna, who is also directed by the Holy Spirit, comes to the Temple. She also recognizes the baby and gives praise and thanks to God for the gift of the Messiah and for her ability to see him before she dies. Mary and Joseph complete the rituals of the presentation and then return to Nazareth. We are told that Jesus grew in wisdom, and that God’s favor was with Him. We are called to listen to the direction of the Holy Spirit in our lives and to grow in wisdom as Jesus did.
Can you imagine what went through Mary and Joseph’s minds and hearts as they listened to Simeon and Anna? What struggles must they have had! Yet they remain faithful and teach Jesus all that he needs to know to grow in his faith. Take time with Mary and Joseph, and ask them to help you be as strong and faithful as they were and to accept all the struggles of your life.
