Feast of the Immaculate Conception

 Gn. 3:9-15, 20 | Ps. 98:1-4 | Eph. 1:3-6, 11-12 | Lk. 1:26-38

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on which we celebrate Mary’s being born without sin.  The readings revolve around listening to the Word of God in a stance of true listening as a lover who wants only to respond to the lover with love.  This is Mary’s stance when the angel comes.  She listens, is perplexed, asks questions, and then as a lover, responds with her “yes” to her lover, God.  This is what Paul is referring to in his letter to the Ephesians.  He is pointing out that Jesus, out of love for us, and out of His love for “Abba” responded with love to the request of Abba.  We see that Adam and Eve fall short from their “yes” to God because they listened to voices other than those of God.  Through Mary’s “yes” and Jesus’ “yes” the response of Adam and Eve is made whole.

How often do you sit to ponder the Word of God spoken in the scriptures?  How do you respond to this Word?  Ask God for the grace to respond with deep love and fidelity to God in all that God asks of you.
