The Fruits of Contemplation Retreat

May 13 @ 5:00 to May 15 @ 12:00 pm

“Contemplation is the highest expression of man’s intellectual and spiritual life. It is that life itself, fully awake, fully active, fully aware that it is alive. It is spiritual wonder.” –Thomas Merton, OCSO

The Diocese of St. Augustine is hosting a retreat that will awaken the “spiritual wonder” for clergy, religious and laity that serve in diocesan and parish ministries. The retreat is May 13-15, beginning on Friday at 5 p.m. and concluding Sunday at noon. The weekend retreat is being held at the beautiful Marywood Retreat & Conference Center, 235 Marywood Dr., St. Johns 32259.

Leading the contemplative retreat is Abbot Dom Augustine Myslinski, OCSO, a Trappist with the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, Ga. In 2016, he was formally blessed in a ceremony by Archbishop Wilton Gregory as the eighth abbot elected for the monastery, which is located outside of Atlanta.

The retreat will offer examples of contemplatives in the church who can speak to us today. Mother Teresa, Charles de Foucauld, Thomas Merton, and of course, Our Lady, Mary of Nazareth. Abbot Augustine will lead participants of the retreat in the following:

  • The development of intimacy prayer with Jesus, foundational for ministry.
  • Appreciate a sense of beauty in which Christ is the expression of beauty.
  • The practice of ancient Lectio Divina as a specific way of praying leads to intimacy with Christ.
  • A contemplative approach can help foster communion with others*
  • Developing an inner posture of listening to God and each other. *

*An expression of synodality
