Familiarity with the Lord

Tuesday of the First Week of Ordinary Time

1 Sm. 1:9-20 | 1 Sm. 2:1, 4-8 | Mk. 1:21-28

The story of Hannah continues.  She is so distressed that she pours out her heart to God.  She promises to dedicate her child to God, if God grants her request for a Son.  The prophet notices her and after conversation with her, blesses her.

Jesus enters the town of Capernaum and goes to the synagogue on the Sabbath.  He touches the people and cures the man with an unclean spirit.  Jesus does all with great authority and the people are attracted to Him because He does so.  There are also those who are dumbfounded because they wonder where He has obtained all this Wisdom.  Jesus, as we know, has this authority because it has been given to Him from God.   Jesus accepts the gift and then uses it to bring others to God.

Each of us has been gifted by God with the Holy Spirit.  We are called to reflect on how fully we have accepted this great gift in our own lives.  In order to do so, we are called to spend time with God in prayer as Hannah and Jesus did.  Through this prayer, we will be given all we need to follow Christ and to do so fully.
