1 Jn. 5:5-13 | Ps. 147:12-15, 19-20 | Mk. 1:7-11
John is telling us that those who believe in Jesus as the Son of God are those who have eternal life. He further explains that Jesus is the One who came not only with water but also with the Spirit. This Spirit brings the truth. In the Gospel, John the Baptist is teaching the people that he is not the Messiah. John testifies to the truth: “There is one who will come and He will baptize with the Spirit.” This is the link with the first reading. Jesus comes to be baptized and the “Spirit of God” rests upon Him and a voice from heaven states: “You are my Son, the Beloved, with you I am well pleased.” Those who were listening surely had to make the connection! Not really, just as we realize not all believe what they see today. Nevertheless, John spoke the truth, and the truth was confirmed through the life of Jesus. We have received the “Spirit of Truth” in our lives through the gift of our anointing at Baptism. This Spirit resides with us and to lead us in following the way of the Son, Jesus.
How do you speak the truth about who you are? Are you willing to follow the inspirations of the Spirit and teach all about Christ through your actions as well as your words? Take time to see if you live according to the Spirit. If not, find some way to begin to live as Christ calls you. Give your life over to God.
