Paul is leading the Corinthians to realize that the gift of God to them is the gift of interior freedom. One who is able to give of oneself or one’s gift’s freely is one who responds to the gift of the Spirit. Wherever the Spirit of God dwells, there is the spirit of freedom.
Jesus is talking about freedom as well. Those who respond to God’s Spirit will not be angry with one’s neighbor. Jesus tells us that if one has anything against a neighbor and goes to worship that person must leave the gift at the altar and return to the neighbor and become reconciled. Jesus is telling us that being in right relationship with God and people is more important than carrying out the letter of the law.
God’s desire for us is freedom. We live in freedom when we listen to the directions of the Spirit and love all the people. How might the Holy Spirit be leading you to freedom? How will you respond?
