1 Kings 19:9a, 11-16 | Ps. 27:7-9, 13-14 | Mt. 5:27-32
Elijah has fled from the Israelites who have killed all the other prophets. He is afraid and goes to Mt. Horeb, a journey of 40 days. He sleeps in a cave. In the morning, God calls him to go out on the mountain to find him. A great wind does followed by an earthquake and then by fire. Elijah does not see God in any of these. A great sound of silence descends. God is in the silence, and Elijah recognizes God in the silence. He is aged by the presence of God.
God comes to us in a similar fashion. We need to be silent in order to recognize God. Do you like or fear silence? Are you able to spend some time each day in silence, without TV, radio, computer Internet, etc.
