Acts 2:1-11 | Ps. 104:1ab, 24 ac, 29c-30, 31, 34 | 1Cor. 12:3b-7, 12-13 | John 20:19-23

Jesus appears to the apostles on the evening of the first day. His first words are: “Peace be with you.” Jesus came to bring us peace. He came to take away our fear. Jesus tells the apostles that He is sending the Holy Spirit who will enable them to forgive sins. The Acts of the Apostles describes the coming of the Holy Spirit to the apostles on Pentecost. The apostles had been preparing for this gift through prayer over the past fifty days. Now the promise of Jesus is fulfilled and the apostles are changed. Everyone in the area is aware of the change and witness it as they Hear the apostles speaking to them in their own language. Paul tells the Corinthians that they are able to acknowledge Jesus as Lord through the gift of the Holy Spirit. Each of them, each of us, is given a different gift from the Spirit to enable the Word of God to be preached to others.

Today, spend time with this scene as depicted in the Acts of the Apostles. Place yourself in the Upper Room with them. Experience the coming of the Holy Spirit. How is your life touched? What does it feel like to be experiencing this great gift? Accept the Holy Spirit into your being. Allow the Holy Spirit to give you all the graces you need to be a messenger of God today.
