Sir. 35:1-12 | Ps. 50:5-8, 14, 23 | Mk. 10:28-31
The theme of generosity pervades the readings today. Generosity is a quality of God which oozes from God’s very being. Sirach encourages us to be people of love who recognize God’s gifts and respond by generously gifting them back to God through deeds, words, and love. Peter tells Jesus that he and the other apostles have left everything and followed Him. Jesus responds not only to Peter but to us as well by telling us that anyone who has left Mother, Father, home, brother, or sister will be rewarded twice as much during this life and in eternal life. Jesus also reminds us that those who are self-seeking and looking to be first in this world will be last and vice versa. Jesus continues to call us to gift ourselves to God through generous service of our neighbor and to do so without seeking a place of notice or honor. Our motives are to be of service out of love.
Take time to reflect on these scripture passages. When have you given freely out of love to the service of other and God? Where is there room for improvement? Ask for the grace to change and to want to give all to God.
