Familiarity with the Lord

Feast of St. Philip Neri

Sir. 36:1, 4-5a, 10-17 | Ps. 79:8-9, 11, 13 | Mk. 10:32-45

We hear words of Sirach praying for God to come to the aid of the people and to show forth His glory to them. In contrast, we hear Jesus telling His disciples that He has not come for glory but to be handed over and put to death. Having said this, James and John approach to ask to sit on the right and left side of Jesus when He comes in glory. It is as if they have not heard a word Jesus has said. When asked if they could drink the cup He is to drink, they immediately reply “yes.” How many times have you rushed into doing the ‘great’ deed, fully confident that you were capable. Then you found out how much of a struggle was involved. This is what Jesus is telling James and John. They will need to pick up the cross and follow him. We know that Jesus will see us through to the end.

Take time to be with Jesus. Contemplate His love for you. Ask Jesus to be with you at each moment of the day, joyful or sorrowful.
