Dn. 7:9-10, 13-14 | Ps. 97:1-2, 5-6, 9 | 2 Pt. 1:16-19 | Mt. 17:1-9
The high mountain in Israel, now called the Transfiguration Mountain, is one of the tallest mountains in Israel. When one looks out from this mountain top, one can see the whole of Israel. It seems fitting that the event recorded in today’s Gospel took place on this peak. Daniel is recording an event where God is praised for God’s wondrous deeds. Peter is recalling the event of the Transfiguration and the specific words of God: “This is my Beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased, listen to him.” All in all, we are called to see that this event was given to us so that our faith in Jesus could grow stronger. Abba reveals who Jesus is by this wonderful visit of Jesus with Moses and Elijah, two of the greatest prophets in all of Israel. God is allowing the apostles and us to come to realize the greatness of Jesus. God goes one step further and tells us that Jesus is His Beloved Son. The words: “Listen to Him” are important. They are a directive, almost an imperative. We have the word of God that Jesus is His Son. How foolish we would be not to listen to Jesus and follow in His footsteps.
Today, imagine yourself on the mountain with Jesus, Peter, James and John. Be attentive and see Moses and Elijah appearing. Then hear God saying: “This is my Beloved Son, listen to him.” How does it feel to be present? What do you think God wants you to listen to? Where will you go? How will you walk in Christ’s footsteps?
