Is. 42:1-4, 6-7 | Ps. 29:1-4, 9-10 | Acts 10:34-38 | Mt. 3:13-17

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of Jesus.  It seems that the readings are going backwards since yesterday’s readings refer to a time after the Baptism.  However, the Sunday readings run on a cycle of their own.

The first reading calls us to listen to Jesus, the one who was sent by God, chosen by God, and in whom God is well pleased.  Isaiah continues to describe this Servant who will bring freedom,  peace, and light to the blind, and establish justice on the earth. 

The Gospel echoes these words when John Baptizes Jesus and the Heavens are opened and the Spirit of God descends on Jesus and a voice says: “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.”  The reading from Acts confirms that Jesus was anointed by God to bring healing to the oppressed.

We are called to recognize that this same gift of the Holy Spirit has been given to us in our Baptism.  We are to walk in Christ’s footsteps bringing peace and joy to all whom we encounter.  We can do this only if we reflect on our own Baptismal call and ask Jesus to help us be strong in living our faith each day of our lives.

Take time to be with Jesus as He is baptized.  Listen to God’s words spoken to Him.  Ask for the grace to live as Christ’s disciple today.
