2 Sm. 1:1-4, 11-12, 19, 23-27 | Ps. 80:2-3, 5-7 | Mk. 3:20-21

The story of David and Saul continues. Today we hear of the death of Saul and his son, Jonathan. David loved Jonathan; and, upon hearing of his death, he tears his garments. This action was a common practice of the Jewish people in times of death or actions perceived as blasphemy. The Gospel depicts a crowd following Jesus. His relatives, meaning cousins, aunts, etc., even villagers are embarrassed by Jesus. So, hearing of this gathering, they come to rescue Jesus thinking that He is out of his mind. The scribes accuse Jesus of being possessed. Jesus simply responds that if one is possessed, why would that person work against Satan. Once again Jesus takes the upper hand.

As you meditate on these passages, consider how great your love for God is. Would you be as distressed as David if your relationship ended? Are you open to where God is leading you, despite the criticism of others? Ask God for the courage to live your convictions fully.
