Ex. 19:1-2, 9-11, 16-20b | Ps. Dn. 3:52-56 | Mt. 13:10-17
Jesus is questioned as to why He speaks in parables. His response is that those whose hearts are open will understand the message of the parables. Those whose hearts are closed will not understand regardless of the message given in parables or not. Jesus quotes Isaiah’s prophecy concerning those with hardened hearts. The Word of God needs pliable soil in order to be planted, grow, and become fruitful. I recall seeing a committee attempting to put up a sign a few weeks ago. We have not had much rain in Florida recently, so you can imagine how hard the soil was. On top of the lack of rain, the soil is clay and the lack of water makes the soil impenetrable. The men had to give up the good location for another area so that they could dig the ground and secure the sign. This is what Christ is talking about. When the soil of our hearts is impenetrable, nothing can touch us.
We need to keep our hearts and souls open so that God’s Word can penetrate and bring us all the great gifts we need in life. We do this by providing time each day for prayer and by being open to change. We do this by asking God for the graces we need. Take time to ask God for all you need each day and to keep your heart open so that you will hear God’s Word.
