Neh. 2:1-8 | Ps. 137:1-6 | Lk 9:57-62
Ezra relates how he was able to go back to Judah for a short time to rebuild the city of Jerusalem. He receives letters for safe passage from the King, Nehemiah. Ezra attributes the possibility for this occurrence to God who constantly watched over him and provided for him.
This same attitude of trust is the attitude that Jesus is referring to when He speaks about the qualities for a good disciple. At first reading, it sounds as if Jesus has gone mad in demanding His disciples to leave parents, etc. What Jesus is asking is that we trust ourselves, our loved ones, our very lives to God. When God asks us to follow God for the sake of the Kingdom, God is asking us to dispose our hearts so that we will do so immediately. When we go out and bring this Good News to others, God will provide what we need.
Take time to reflect on this Gospel reading. Where might God be calling you today? Ask for the grace to respond positively and immediately.
