The Dedication of the Basilicas of Sts. Peter and Paul

1Mc. 2:15-29 | Ps. 50:1-2, 5-6, 14-15 | Lk. 19:41-44

Mattathias is a faithful follower of the Lord.  When threatened, he defies the order of the King to offer sacrifice to other gods.  Jesus is standing over Jerusalem lamenting the fact that despite the example of so many people (e.g. Mattathias) the Jewish people have not been faithful to God and have not responded to Jesus’ teaching.  Jesus then prophesizes concerning the fall of Jerusalem.

Perhaps we will never be called to task for being Christian especially since we live in a country where there is freedom of religion.  However, each day, we are called to give witness to living our faith to others.  How do you respond when you are challenged for your beliefs?  How do you respond to the pressures of society?

Take time today to examine your lived faith.  What are you willing to defend?  What causes you some pain when challenged?  Bring these to God for the graces you need in living your daily life.
