Familiarity with the Lord

Wednesday of the First Week of Lent

Readings: Jonah 3:1-10 | Ps. 51:3-4, 12-13, 18-19 | Luke 11:29-32

Jesus is calling us to realize that God loves us deeply. God calls us to belong to God. If anything keeps us from belonging to God, if anything distracts us from loving God, then we must repent and change our ways. Jesus refers to the people of Nineveh and reminds the Israelites how the Ninevites responded to Jonah’s preaching. The Ninevites heard the Word preached by Jonah and changed their ways. They stopped their evil ways of acting and fasted. God changed His mind and did not destroy the Ninevites. Jesus tells us that someone greater than Jonah is in our midst, and we should listen and change.

Today spend time thinking of how Jesus calls you to change. Perhaps that call is as simple as spending more time with your family or perhaps by spending ten extra minutes in prayer. Resolve to change. Ask God for help to be faithful. Make a plan to carry out your decision.
